How to Play Rummy: 13-Card Indian Rummy Rules With Examples

Indian rummy is the most popular card game in Yono apps, and it is easier to learn than it looks. In one sentence: you arrange 13 cards into valid sequences and sets, and the first player to do it correctly wins the deal. This guide explains everything you need, with examples, and finishes with tips that make a real difference.

The Basics

  • Players: 2 to 6 at a table.
  • Cards: one or two standard decks, depending on the number of players, plus printed jokers.
  • Hand: 13 cards each.
  • Goal: group all 13 cards into valid combinations and declare before anyone else.

Jokers

There are two kinds of joker:

  • Printed jokers: the joker cards that come with the deck.
  • Wild joker: at the start of each deal, one card is turned face up. Every card of that rank becomes a joker for that deal. If the wild card is a 7, all four 7s are jokers.

Jokers can stand in for any missing card in an impure sequence or a set. They count zero points if left in your hand.

Sequences and Sets

CombinationRuleExample
Pure sequenceThree or more consecutive cards of one suit, no joker4♥ 5♥ 6♥
Impure sequenceA sequence that uses a joker for a missing card8♣ Joker 10♣
SetThree or four cards of the same rank, different suits9♠ 9♦ 9♥
Set with jokerA set completed by a jokerK♣ K♥ Joker
Valid combinations with examples

Two details catch beginners out. An ace can be low (A-2-3) or high (Q-K-A), but sequences do not wrap around (K-A-2 is not valid). And a set cannot contain two cards of the same suit.

How a Turn Works

  1. Pick one card, either the top card of the open (discard) pile or the top card of the closed deck.
  2. Rearrange your hand if you like.
  3. Discard one card face up onto the open pile.

When your hand is complete, you pick your 14th card, place one card on the "finish" slot and show your groups. That is called declaring.

A Valid Declaration

To declare correctly you need:

  • At least two sequences.
  • At least one of them pure (no joker).
  • Every other card in a valid sequence or set.
GroupCardsType
12♠ 3♠ 4♠Pure sequence
27♦ 8♦ JokerImpure sequence
3Q♣ Q♦ Q♠Set
49♥ 10♥ J♥ Q♥Pure sequence
Example of a winning 13-card hand

That is 3 + 3 + 3 + 4 = 13 cards, with the required pure sequence.

Scoring and Penalties

When someone declares, everyone else counts the points of their unmatched cards.

  • Aces, kings, queens and jacks: 10 points each.
  • Number cards: their face value.
  • Jokers: zero.

First drop (before your first pick)20
Middle drop (later in the deal)40

Points, Pool and Deals Rummy

  • Points rummy: one deal. Each point has a money value set by the table.
  • Pool rummy: played over many deals. You collect penalty points and are eliminated at 101 or 201 points. The last player left wins the pool.
  • Deals rummy: a fixed number of deals played with chips. Whoever has the most chips at the end wins.

10 Tips That Make a Difference

  1. Build your pure sequence first. Without it, nothing else counts.
  2. Keep jokers for impure sequences and sets, never "waste" them.
  3. Discard high, unconnected cards early to limit your points if you lose.
  4. Drop hopeless hands at the start. A first drop costs far less than a full loss.
  5. Watch the open pile. What opponents pick tells you what they are building.
  6. Do not discard cards that complete an opponent's obvious group.
  7. Middle cards (5 to 9) connect in more ways than edge cards.
  8. Sort your hand quickly so the turn timer never forces a mistake.
  9. Check your groups twice before you declare.
  10. Practise on free tables until you can declare without thinking.

Rummy and the Law

Rummy was long treated as a game of skill in India, but cash rummy is now an online money game under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, with rules in force since 1 May 2026. Free rummy without money stakes is not affected. See is Yono games legal in India and our rummy apps list.
